Sadly, my computer has been in repair and it looks like my HD is in a bad state, and I may possibly lose a lifetime of photos - I dont care about anything else, but my photos...there's no going back there. This makes me sad. I'm not thinking or worring too much about it until I know for certain. So, for now I'm uploading photos and blogging on DD's computer for my last Blogtober post! He lost everything on his HD last week, the computer guys believe it may have been caused by an electrical storm we had last week. Crazy stuff.

Following on from my last post, we managed to make our eyeball biscuits - this was fun! We got to the Halloween party...the girls were as shy as anything to begin with, you wouldn't think looking at these pre party pics, but really...Halloween for a 3 and 4 yr old is scary stuff! They warmed up when they saw the jumping castle.

DD and I got married on Halloween. We eloped to Vietnam. We had already been together 10 yrs, so eloping was a good decision. We've been married for 10 yrs...yes, together for 20!! So, a little time together will be nice tomorrow. We're really excited about an uniterrupted nights sleep and sleep in, while the girls sleep over at the grandparents. Nice.

That's 4 carrot shavings worth, right there. The girl likes her carrots, accentuated by the discovery of how theraputic it feels to peel them.

I've missed a couple of blog post through pure exhaustion. Helping my sister move into her apartment, traveling Ikea aisles for 4 hrs! Preparing our backyard for this special arrival - the girls are all over this cubby...and I'm feeling some vintageness is in order.

So, while clearing the back miss beast and her eggs was spotted and I rushed for the macro. I was a little too frightened to get any closer in case it jumped on my face.

Day 11 - All things Green

I did a quick veg shop after work today and as I unpacked everything I noticed how quickly the kitchen bench was filling with green! Basil would have to be by far my favourite green...the scent is just divine.

I've always cooked with fresh vegetables, it's the way I've been brought up. Plus, there's something wholesome & therapeutic in chopping raw veggies, as oppose to opening up a freezer bag. I'm not saying frozen veggies are no good, I'm just not use to that way of living. Our biggest delight has always eaten her veggies raw - carrots, beans, peas (frozen! our only type) she really likes the crunch factor.

Anyway, after all this goodness above and eating a brilliant seafood salad for dinner, I succumbed to a raspberry shortcake biscuit. It's been 11 days and my will power has been extraordinary otherwise. I must say though, I am eating more fat but I'm not feeling fat(yet), so that's got to be a good thing.

Day 10 - Decisions...

We are landscaping the front & backyard...or at least in the decision process! No, we don't do a whole lot ourselves around here. We would love to but we just don't have the time. We can't wait to have a backyard to sit in over the Summer break. It's been far too long without one. Right now, we are deciding what type of exterior wood to use for the deck...

Day 9 - eating & shopping.

1. Oatmeal with natural full fat yoghurt, banana & cinnamon. Fruit is slowly creeping back into my 'sugar free' diet. 50gms of banana here = 8.5gms of sugar! Learn more about the benefits of oatmeal here. It's a super food.
2. Adding to my Heidi collection, purchased from the local St Vinnies $1 each, and some pretty cute hankies.
3. I adore this piece...its folk design and colours. $4 from Savers.

Day 8 - Grateful for young sisters.

Blogtober 7 - Keeping Healthy

Changing the way I eat and eliminating sugar from my diet has been easy so far, sure I've had my moments of 'I need sugar now!' but I have resisted and taken on board some advice from others when the cravings kick in. Thankful, at this stage I'm not missing it, although I'm missing fruit terribly. I still don't feel light and fresh, and I know it's a lack of water consumption and exercise at the moment. I pulled a muscle in my neck quite badly and it has left me out of action for a while.

For now, I will rely on my ever increasing vitamin & mineral intake in for of pills! It seems to be growing greatly as I age, are others finding this too? Multi vitamins, fish oil & magnesium this should keep me all balanced for a while. That's the plan anyway.

I met my baby niece today *Violet* she's gorgeous. We spoke about her feet and how incredibly big they are for such a tiny one. These aren't her feet! But do stay tuned for "Miss Violet's Feet" soon...

Speaking of new feet...I'm waiting in anticipation for my beautiful friend to give birth any day now. Yah for babies everywhere!!!

I love receiving mail. The kind you retrieve from a letter box rather than an inbox. Thanks to friends who are always thinking of me, and who KNOW me so well! I want to be picking daisies too.

Off to dinner now...I'm running late again. Something for Lars to read while she waits xx.

Blogtober 4 & 5 - Family Time

It started with a trip to The Royal Melbourne Show. It was fun and exhausting all at once, and a little disappointing because I didn't even get to step foot into the Arts and Craft building...geez kids! There was no patience or stamina left in these two delights to allow mum a 15min run around in this very worthwhile exhibition, but that's OK. I guess.

From there we went straight to our hotel destination. The girls were so excited. Show bags were pulled apart and play time started, at least for an hour before DD and I were being tugged and nagged, "Can we go to the pool now?" So we did. Why aren't 'heated pools' NEVER heated enough?

Dinner was room service. By this stage we were all beyond tired and I needed SUGAR. Fruit - that was my craving, but I knew if I started on the left over fruit salad that DD prepared for the show, that I wouldn't stop. So, I munched on two mouth fulls of licorice and that was it! I knew breakfast would be a different story.

Breakfast was buffet style. I usually go over board here, after all I want to get my dollars worth, but I was sensible. Yes, I caved in but only a little (we all knew I was going to). I ate bircher muesli that was so over the top sweet I couldn't finish it, good thing after 5 days of no sugar. Then, I really couldn't resist my favourite muffins at this place, carrot and walnut - now these muffins are tiny! I ate half, which probably equalled to 40gms. I thought I did well overall but I'm still not feeling great. I know it's lack of exercise and water consumption here.

It was just awesome spending some family time. We think our chics are heaps of fun!

Blogtober 3 - Packing

We are packing for a night away...1 night...so much stuff! Packing for these two little delights feels like we should be going away for a week. Sometimes I wander is it worth it? One night. And then I remember how excited they were when we told them about our plans for a stay at 'the hotel', over the windy bridge. Worth everything.
Trouble is, I'm moody. I need sugar. Our hotel stay involves a buffet breakfast, a delicious one at that. Question is...Will I cave in?

A little trip to the local botanical gardens trying to soak up as may sun bursts that came our way today. We've missed the sun. It's been so miserable in our city for way too long. The occasional sunny day here and there but nothing consistent enough to makes us feel all warm and happy - the next few days are forecast for more sunshine. Yippee!
*All going well here in the land of no sugar! I'm eating loads of cheese and protein though, which is keeping me fuller for longer but I hope it doesn't back fire with growing love handles.

Blogtober 1 - Sugar "No More"

What better way to get back into blogging than committing to Blogtoberfest?! I have been so inconsistent with my posts and the thought of not having this little space on the world wide web makes me sad...so let me try to get this sorted. The only way I will succeed with Blogtober is to post anything of interest to me and not restrict my post to just 'craft' cause obviously that's lacking in my life right now, sort of.

So, Blogtober Day 1 is about SUGAR and there will be many more posts on this topic over the month as I have decided to cut sugar/fructose from my diet. I haven't been feeling well for some time and about 6 weeks ago I downloaded an app on my phone called My Fitness Pal. I began to record the foods I consumed each day - I was shocked at how much sugar my 'healthy' foods contained. Apples 15gms of sugar! Bananas 50% sugar! Some would question 'but they're healthy sugars?' Well, yes they are but fructose is fructose and if it's an ingredient that may be the cause of making me feel unwell, then I'm going to give it up to see how my body responds. To put some perspective on all this, through My Fitness Pal I was only suppose to be consuming 24 gms of sugar a day. I only lasted 2 weeks but I felt so incredibly different - lighter, happier and more energetic.A friend suggested some good reading material:
Sweet Poison by David Gillespie and I Quit Sugar by Sarah Wilson.
I read Sarah's ebook last night and it reminded me why I was doing this. It just has to happen.

The plan is to eat more fats, good ones of course, feel fuller in the hope that it will reduce my cravings and focus on loads of protein.

Day one complete. My belly - still bloated from the family block of chocolate I ate last night.
They say it takes 4 weeks to cut a habit - I'm in no hurry.

Grateful for Love.

You know, there are a whole lot of people out there that are not loved, have not loved or know what love is. I'm lucky to have always been loved and to know how to share my love with others. Nothing beats genuine love and it's truly the only thing that matters to me.

I'm extra grateful this week for the one on one time I got with my littlest delight. Yesterday was a special morning with her, we weren't rushing off to swimming, Gymbaroo or tennis...we were strolling hand in hand in the sun, just to the end of the street where we ate lunch at an Italian cafe and smiled at each other, and chatted about nothing. You see, normally the biggest delight is present usually taking over all conversation and clearly being the dominant character. But not yesterday.

As it is highly unlikely I will post anything tomorrow...

Happy Father's Day to the most wonderful dad to our little babes, in the world! You mean everything to us.

And to my father in law who would have to be the gentlest most patient man I know, thank you for taking care of our girls each week - they love you too bits as we do too.

I've neglected my little blog of late. The purpose of this blog is to keep me crafting, to record my ideas and share them with fellow craft bloggers, document craft processes, things that inspire me, and to have this 'visual online diary' as a keepsake for my children to read through one day. Although I upload photos of my family and create posts of the things we are up to, it's not my focus for kiss the birdie. So...because there hasn't been a whole lot of crafting going on here, I haven't blogged.

Time is a big issue right now and I'm feeling so tired and uninspired to create. I like to sew but the thought of pulling everything out at 8pm simply makes me avoid it. I'm an all or nothing type of person, so once I start I find it hard to pull away. I've been known to keep going till 2am and I just can't afford to do that to my mind and body right now. When I get into a project, I become extremely focused, unsocial, deaf and neglect all other things around me. Why do I find it so hard to balance this hobby that I enjoy? Why can't I do a little at a time? Is it the degree of effort? I find it easier with knitting, I can pick it up and put it down without too much fuss. The only problem here is that I only know 3 type of stitches. I can't follow a pattern because I don't know enough, the knitting abbreviations, the glossary terms.....arghh. I need to read and read and understand this all, but I just want to know how to do it now - so impatient.

This week, after my third consecutive day at work, I came home exhausted and longing for big cuddles from my little girls. On the kitchen bench was some mail. I absolutely love receiving mail that's addressed to me, that's not a bill, a reminder or advertising. An invitation maybe? A thank you card? With curiosity I ripped it open and smiled when I saw the front of the card...as I read I knew I was a very lucky girl to have such amazing friends in my life.

Realising how free and happy we can be on a short break, where the pace is slow and where there is time to just sit and enjoy life, has made DD and I think how great it would be to do up an old caravan! In the hope to eventually have more regular breaks and for the pure challenge.
#Oh, and after a visit from Mr Whippy the other day...I thought how blissful it would be to drive around in caravan image no.3 and sell cupcakes all day! Let me just check that tatts ticket...

I'm grateful for genuine friends.
I'm blessed to have friends that warm my heart and that know me.
A lead light box made for me by a man I have never met. His daughter however is a dear friend whose friendship I value and treasure. Danielle asked her dad (who is a very talented man) to make me this special box, as she felt I always make for others and that I deserved a bit of hand made in return. How unexpected! My dear old grandmother is teaching me how to knit 'patounia' otherwise known as 'knitted slippers'. I try and interact with her as much as I can, so I gave her a buzz last week and asked her to show me how to knit these sweet things. Growing up I always had a pair floating around the house - they're ever so sweet and I shall post some better photos tomorrow. I'm not too confident with her teachings though;
Me: "how do you knit this part grandma?"
Grandma: "you just go round and round and round."

Reverse Fabric Collage

During my Art studies I did a reverse art collage which was fun and exploratory. It involved layers of paper; textured, printed, coloured, handmade, thin, thick...
When the last layer was applied you would slowly tear away parts of that paper to reveal the paper underneath, and so on. It was interesting but challenging as you couldn't really gauge on how the colours would work together. I thought I would try something similar with fabric. I knew what I wanted it to look like, but I couldn't achieve it. Katie, a friend from our Craft-a-noon group used this technique to make simple purses. However, instead of using 2 fabrics I 'collaged' one piece using many different fabrics, and then used a whole piece of fabric on top, sewing away in strips and then cut in between the stitching. I frayed the edges and the result was...well, too much colour! I love the texture and look of the loose threads but I should have kept the fabric simpler...
This fabric was going to be used to make a tote bag but I'm so uninspired now...bother!

Toni Maticevski

Toni is a high school friend of mine. He is a true inspiration. At school, you would never find him socialising during breaks, if you wanted to find him, he'd be in the textiles department...sewing away like a mad man. Today, his natural talent and dedication to his work has earned him respect and admiration in the fashion world, a hard thing to get in this competitive field. Toni is a beautiful friend, always has been...you know the type that you may not have kept in contact for 6months but when you meet up, they're still the same person? Fame has not changed Toni one bit, he's still a 'dag' to be around and has a great sense of humour - he gets that from him lovable mum. I wish him every bit of success xx.

Liberty fabric & Fuss free muffins.

I'll be making cushions from this Liberty combo, I just need to source some linen backing. Ink & Spindle usually stock a lovely light weight linen, perfect for cushions but it seems like they may be out of stock. I'm hoping to get to their Open Day this Sat and look into it further.

In the mean time, I should taste test those muffins!

Learning from the old.

I spent some time with my grandma over the weekend. She was doing a little mending, she doesn't sew for enjoyment anymore...she feels guilty doing anything other than mourning for her husband and daughter. Although cooking is an exception, she always makes sure our bellies are full to the brim. At one point, just after we had finished eating, she burst into tears and said, "Oh, my darling grandchildren I feel so happy now that you have eaten."

Her spinach and rice dish was scrumptious. Served with fresh white bread and spreadable western star butter (these two foods don't exist in our house). I wanted to blog the recipe, mainly for me to remember what's in it, I'll be making it soon. I love sitting outside eating and chatting to my grandma about her meals, what goes in each one, what she uses from her garden, how she's all about throwing ingredients together, nothing measured, and in between all that there's a whole lot of deciphering....translating....laughing as we try to understand each other. My Greek isn't what it use to be and her English...well, it's never been good.

Love the industrial Singer...and check out the thread catcher on the over locker! She said...."Oh, this sewing machine, it's so old...who's going to have this big thing when I'm gone, no one will want it?"

Heat up oil, throw in chopped onion until soft.
Add paprika
Add spinach until wilted
Fill pot with water, or as much as you want
Throw in rice
Basil and salt to taste

Sounds easy!

I spent today...a gorgeous Autumn day...with the wonderful DD and my two delights. We headed to the city, as we often do. Busy, busy, we forgot that Moomba parade was on (drrrr). We managed to do the usual stop offs, plus more....we added a "Slurpee" intake and a play at Flagstaff Gardens. It was a perfect dose of vitamin D and sugar! I loved the big fig tree - we picked up the fallen figs and rolled them down the hill, and then kicked the last one we threw all the way back to the car. Such a simple thing. So here, my playful washes continue with figs as my inspiration.

I have finally got it out there. My new blog Her Red Apple requires one to shift their minds from craft to cancer. If you can spare 5 minutes please read My Story. It's confronting but it's real. I want people to be aware of this disease and what it can do to a life. The good news is that this type of cancer is treatable if detected early. Your awareness might just save the life of someone you know and love. I would deeply appreciate your support in "embracing mothers around the world" .........because they are worth it.

On a lighter note...making more softies for newborns (a few expected arrivals this year). A recycled light weight wool blend with a touch of Liberty on the belly.

I missed the 2nd Crafternoon session with the chics but made it to the 3rd...thought it was time to dig out Might Mouse again, currently standing (or..resting) at 20cm tall. This will take me forever.

Aren't grandmother's just the best with their hands?

When I was little my grandmother looked after me when mum worked. I would go to her house after school and smell her crepes cooking from a mile away. My mouth would water.
Food is her way to people's hearts. "You must know how to cook", she always says. Since mum died I have called her several times asking her how to make a particular dish. She has always loved to cook and gets excited when you ask her for help.

Unfortunately, since the death of her husband (almost a year ago) and only two months after losing her daughter (my mum), she has lost all motivation to cook, sew and tender to her veggie patch. So, I called her up and asked her if we could come for brunch and if she would show me how to make 'her crepes'. She was thrilled.

Ingredients
5 eggs whisked
2 litres of milk
pinch of salt
Butter or/and Nutella for spread

Makes about 50 crepes

The mixture was slightly runnier than normal and the crepes were extra thin and yummy, but a little more difficult to turn over. I love that there's no flour in this recipe.

As you can see in this picture there is a block of butter. As the crepes were made I was 'instructed' to lather on the butter and fold the crepe in half and half again. They were stacked. Unfortunately I have no more photographs because the battery in my camera was flat. One dark photo is all.

So, with around 50 crepes we used 400 gms of butter!! As I lathered the last crepe in the last teaspoon of butter, I said to my grandmother, "wow just enough" and she replied with, "I usually open another block, you weren't very generous with the butter". Seriously.

I took some home and they were still amazing heated up in the microwave. DD came home and said, "Hey, these would be really nice with Nutella..."

And so they were indeed...

Crafternoon Girls

We talked about it forever. Let's organise a day to just sew. Finally our first Crafternoon (as the partner of one of the crafters has named it). It was ever so relaxing. Chatting, sewing, eating, sipping, sharing ideas and techniques. It's the first of many more to come and I'm happy to be sharing this time with a great group of girls.

To add, my little project for the day was to make a Hope Softie for a child affected by the Queensland Floods. Thank you to Steph from Mon Petit Poppet for organising this generous appeal. I'm using a Melly & Me pattern which I'm sometimes following. Their patterns are not very explanatory for a newbie softie maker, so it's just as well I have some tricks and techniques already up my sleeve.

While browsing the web for some silhouette artwork I came across the most talented paper cut artist, Beth White. I find her truly inspiring and completely amazing to produce works with such patience and accuracy. Her whimsical designs make me smile and I'm so sad she doesn't make them anymore. I get a real thrill seeing all those tiny negative spaces form an incredible piece of art. I must have one of these on my wall! What a talented lady.

I've always wanted to give decals a try. I just need to become a good illustrator. Can I do that? Can it be learnt? Or does it come naturally? Anyhow, for now I will admire this girl who does them brilliantly. I'm just in love with her cutsie plates and look forward to her Esty shop opening again in Feb.

is this tiered skirt.

It was well received. She watched me make it during the day, so I left it on her rocking chair at night so she would see it when she woke the next morning. She ran to my room and jumped in my bed and said, "Oh, I love it. Thank you for my dress". How awesome it that?

Of course once it was on there was no stopping her. She slipped on my heels (latest obsession and probably because they are new and I don't own many) and off she went twirling, hence the warped pics.

I followed this tutorial though now that I've made it, I have an idea of how it all works and I will stitch it up a little differently next time. Just to keep the hemming as narrow and a flat as possible.

Over all, I'm happy with it. Though a little loose around the waist. Skinny Minny!

I'm just not going to show you the inside. Hmm...and we won't talk about the cut through the fabric as I was unpicking my mistakes, hmm again.

the OVERLOCKER...

Three years ago, my gorgeous DD bought me a brand new overlocker. I was daunted by the idea of an overlocker, after all, I was only making the novice softy here and there.

It was too adventurous for me and very expensive.

I took it back.

About a year ago now, a gorgeous kind friend gave me her overlocker. We were moving house and doing a few renos, so it stayed in the shed for ages (+ I was a bit scared of it). Eventually, it moved from the shed to my sewing table. It sat there for a few months before I attempted to use it.

One day, I built up the courage and gave it a go...took me forever to thread it up.

I started it up....broke 3 needles in 2 hours. What was I doing wrong??!! It gave me the sh*** so I walked away from it.

Last week, I 'read the manual' replaced the needles, oiled it up and gave it a crack. I played with it for ages, adjusting the tension and getting it just right.

Yesterday, I cut up some fabric to make the big delight a skirt - I'm giving the overlocked hem a go! I thought I better practise some more first. Do I use cutter or no cutter? I don't know but I'm playing.

Then this starting happening (last pic) why is it just randomly not sewing a stitch???

After aaaages, I looked up. Oh! The thread has twisted, it got lonely and joined the fellow threader next to her - making them one. Ahhhh....

Who has seen The King's Speech? You know that bit where he swears crazy (very funny) that was me with my over locker. Still is.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to 'making'. I will get there and I will keep this little project updated...

I often post about my Op shop finds, so I thought I may as well join in on Sophie's Flea Market Finds meme this week, and check out what others have been purchasing for a bargain.

Children's Clothing Both my babes are well past the 1 year old mark, but I couldn't resist this denim dress and singlet top with floating hearts. I'll wrap it up for a special girl.

Jeans I've never bothered trying on a pair of second hand jeans before, the ordeal of finding a good new pair is enough! Thin waist, chunky solid legs...I could spend all day trying on jeans and have no success. So when a couple of really good condition seconds came my way, I gave it I go. And whataya know?! Two pairs that fitted really well. Plus a Diesel denim skirt only to be worn with tights and boots of course, all for $26.

Vintage Spice Jars I purchased the yellow ones in the background not long ago, so when I saw these for just $2, I didn't think twice. It always astounds me that people can own these ceramics for years and take good care of them, but when I get my hands on them I somehow manage to develop butter fingers.

Cards Blank pretty birdie cards, always lovely to have.

Vintage Sheeting When I showed DD he said, "and what are you going to do with that?" Maybe a sectioned European pillow case? It doesn't really matter, I'll just store it with the rest of my fabrics.

Origami When I showed him these ones, he said "Oh, I use to have those when I was a kid". He's very good at it, I suck at it (it's the whole following instructions thing). The girls will love seeing these paper creations unfold.

That's all folks. That's how I chose to spend my few hours alone last week...and loved it.

Me and you went on a date.

It was a sunny Sunday.

I said, "Psst, there's the Finders' Market on at The Abbotsford Covent on the first Sunday of every month, wanna go?"

We went.

The Market wasn't on.

It was Jan 2nd, the world was still waking up to the New Year.

But we had a brilliant brunch. Then hit the city (as we do) and spent more money on our daughters.

2011 will be more about me and you.

The Abbotsford Convent is a special place, it feels like you're in a different city (for just a bit).

It's been a long time between posts. I do that. There's a lot of energy required to blog. Whether it's taking your own photos or surfing the web for interesting things, it all takes time. Life hasn't slowed down for me since mum died, it's been go, go go and part of me wonders how my mind and body will be when I stop.
We moved into our new house Christmas Eve 2009, and like all new homes it takes time to make it your own. Slowly, slowly parts of me and my family have warmed up our new home and it's just starting to feel like ours. We're settling. Life's settling and we're looking forward to a good rest and the New Year.

On a different note, I'm an Op shopper and when I buy things, they may sit in storage (between furniture, under beds, squashed in cupboards) for sometime until it's right for that piece to show itself. Mirrors, goblets, glass bottles, spice jars, side tables come to life! Decorative our home and making it ours....this is as creative as it gets right now.

Thank you to my friend Lauren from Owlet for your lovely gifts - it made me smile. I love that quote! Yes, the water's been hot...but we're doing well xx.

When visiting Magnolia Square a couple of weeks ago, I picked up these ever so sweet cupcake wrappers. When my big delight was born in '07, I went through a scary phase of cupcake making, I just kept making them, like a possessed cupcake making robot....I'm over it now. But, I still enjoy the occasional cupcake bake. Tomorrow, I will get up at 5am to make 2 dozen of these beauties, they truly are the yummiest vanilla cupcake. Why am I making them at the crack of dawn? Well, my little delight is turning 2 *sigh* and I think she's awesome and deserves lots of cake!! Plus, I'm working during the day and DD ain't touching that recipe...it needs to be made with heaps and heaps of love, like a good coffee does. Not that he doesn't have heaps and heaps of love to give, it's just that it's my thing...the cupcake thing.

Hello.
Thought I would join the Flea Market Find of the Year meme this week.
Everyone should have "old stuff" in their house! So here goes some of my favourites this year...

1. Suitcase (local church op shop) shoes (Salvos) & bats (local op shop)
2. Trunk (local second hand shop) & glass serving tray - doily under glass. This was my mum's found in her garage recently, it brought back childhood memories.
3. Vintage plates, mirror & chair (garage sale...it was a good one!)
4. Retro chair (picked up from side of the road - I got it upholstered), the two pieces on either side - Tillander 60's chair & sideboard weren't bargains but very much second hand from Grandfather's Axe & glass goblet (garage sale).

So, there...
that was fun!

Spontaneity

I like spontaneity. A room with two queen size beds and city views. The littlest delight is likely to share one queen with me, whilst the bigger delight shares with her daddy. It's just for one night, but we're gunna have fun! Late night strolls in the city, skipping, singing, playing games and lots of cuddles. We did consider them having a stay over at grandma's and grandpa's, but nahhh we want them with us!

mini unstructured word quilt

Oh my, it's been a long time between posts. The school holidays have began and I feel like I'm just catching my breath. Time for a little rest.

This project was meant to have been completed by the end of the term, something the grade 1/2's and I are working on. The topic for the term was "What makes a good Athlete". We focused quite a bit on character strengths, defined them, wrote stories on them and cut pretty fabric to create these words with a focus on making a 'mini unstructured word quilt' (yes, my one day a week with this beautiful grade makes me fortunate to have some flexibility).

They were superstars at getting their little fingers working around not so sharp scissors and cutting small letters. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to teach 18 students how to sew on tiny letters in the 10 sessions I had with them, so that job was left to me. Now, to gather all the bits...
I have no plan, I'm thinking just...throw and sew. Could be disastrous.

A beaten up chest that looks like it's been around. I would so love to know exactly where it's been and what others used it for. When I saw this piece I did the 'double look', the yellow made me smile. I knew it would go perfect in out living space. DD liked it too, his question..."is this more storage for your fabrics?" Thursday has become a 'paid work day' for me but fortunately I have this week off and I'm joining in Kirsty's meme My Creative Space. It's been a while. Now, this means letting the washing go and giving myself a couple of hours to sew. Fabric choices above for some cushions, I managed to cut up the fabric on the left, the plan was to use invisible zippers....hmmm, I didn't realise there was a special 'zipper footer' needed for this. So, of course it set me back. I will persist though.

Then, there's these tennis bats I picked up from the local op shop, I was completely attracted to them. They just need some pretty coverings, totally impractical, yes...but who cares as long as they're pretty. Maybe I can smack the ball with these ever so cute shoes from the Salvos for $4! I have the image in my head....can you picture it? He he.

It's white, simple, clean and fresh. We love our new space. Would I change anything? Yes. Splashback would be tiled for some texture. Probably would have chosen a natural stone like granite over caesar, or maybe even a wood top. 900 everything as oppose to 600. Of course, it would be a different kitchen and $$$$$$ much more.

How does one choose with so many beautiful designs and options out there? We always wanted dark floors and a white kitchen, but this kitchen needs depth. Plates on walls? An exposed shelf? Cup storage display like the one below? With a kitchenaid mixer beside it *smile*. Oh, and how I would have loved a huge vintage cooker. I'm considering this kitchen as a work in progress. Just needs some character...that's all.

Life...

Being back at work 3 days has left no time for my craft, well, there is after 8pm but I also need to fit in some exercise for my sanity...so once that's over...forget it! I'm knackered.

So, I need to get back into the routine of 6am exercise, so it's done and out of the way. I've always found it the best time for that. I'm just so over this cold...it's boring now. Desperate for some warmth outdoors. Need to get this routine happening so I have an hour of craft a night.

In an interview here, Kootoyoo said she packed up the craft for 4 years when the kids were little. I just can't commit to packing it up...it would be strange not seeing things around me half done.

We're happy though...decorating masks, baking and dancing to this song. A song that brought a tear to my eye on a crap morning in the middle of heavy traffic, on the way to work. There was an image that went with it...a very cool dad taking his little girl to school. He had a grey trench coat on with the collar up, jeans and white sneakers. His daughter (I assumed) had beautiful flowing long brown hair wearing a warm jacket with shorts, tights and boots skipping along while holding her dads hand. The beauty of just stopping (forced to in this case) and observing life around us. Or maybe, you just had to be there.

A Little Transformation

Mum's ornate gold frames have been sprayed black and are now sitting on our wall as a work in progress. Mum's taste in design was very different to my own. Going through her things is hard...but what I do love, is that with a little transformation it can suit our taste, be used, admired and still referred to as mum's. A reminder of her in each room is really special.

I collected this chair off someones nature strip, what a shame they were tossing it away, however, the fabric was in rather revolting condition. It's all fresh now. We chose a Warwick fabric in Endeavour Lime. It was really tricky trying to capture it's true colour, the second photo seems the most accurate.

Now we need to layer and add some pretty cushions. I was thinking of using this striking yellow orange floral table cloth, given to me from a beautiful friend, and this vintage curtain material I picked up today from a local Op Shop.

P.S. I'm just loving canary yellow right now...touches of this colour MUST surround this new living space.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to see all the wonderful action at Design Made Trade this year, but I discovered Yellow Diva through Kootoyoo's highlights of the day, and what can I say...I have found some sexy and stylish stools I would love for the kitchen.

Though, I will probably have to sell my body.

Oh, and that yellow legged side table - DD we just HAVE to support these talented designers...it's enriching!

A Sunny Sunday...

On Sunday, my man and I celebrated his birthday by visiting a couple of wonderful design markets that I wanted to get to. What a shocker I am, but I could see...he loved the vibe of it all. The Melbourne Design Market was one and the other was just upstairs at Fed Square called MARK it. I spotted the lovely Carmel from Feed the Dog, I haven't seen her work before...it was just wonderful. I love her mix of screen printing, lino and hand stitching. She's inspired me to get back to this creative space.

It wasn't all markets...we enjoyed a super film @ the Kino and had the most heartiest meal ever at The European. Paella eat your heart out! If you have never visited The European in Melbourne City...GO!

admiring this vintage quilt that belonged to my mother in-laws mother. It sits folded at the end of our bed, as it needs some rescuing.

I'm in awe of it each time I walk into my bedroom, the colours, the history, the enormous effort put in to it. I want to attempt this one day, but do I use vintage fabrics or do I use the wonderful prints and designs of independent textile designers of today?

It would be lovely to show my kids what designers of today are producing in one big quilt. I guess it will be vintage to them and their children someday.

I've been drowning in the process of our kitchen renovations, which has sucked every inch of my (very little) time. Thankfully, it looks wonderfully fresh and almost complete. With my mind frazzled with home renos and chasing after my two little delights, I still find time (wink) to pop into the local Op and purchase heart sinking fabrics that I WILL use...one day. I'm not the most productive of crafters, but once I get suck into a project, no-one can talk to me! Stay tuned...

It's been an intense few weeks. So little blogging, but sadly there has been zilch crafting...did I mention we still have our kitchen in our craft room? The kitchen is nearly complete. Then we need to paint the walls. No high pressed metal ceilings in this room...so I think we will manage painting it on our own, just. Then we can decorate...not much more to do here though, except spray paint these gorgeous ornate photo frames of mum's and pop our black and white family photos in them. We bought this lovely piece from eBay. It's coming together and so...this is my creative space.

Who was I kidding? Thinking I could whip up a tote in 1.5hrs. Sure, I probably could have but my perfectionism and attention to detail always gets in the way. So, what was meant to be a simple tote with pretty fabric, no lining, no nothin' else...ended up being quite detailed for a project I started at 9pm and wanted to finish that evening, to be wrapped and given as a gift for a beautiful friend the next day.

That day, I worked. I didn't get to bed till 2am! Brain frazzled and voice gone (some may say that's a good thing) that morning. Time wasn't on my side...I was interrupted by a button hole that wouldn't sew (so I googled the error message), linen that wouldn't press, interfacing that needed a hot iron for longer than it was necessary, and other silly mistakes one makes at that time of the night. Or is it just me that always seems to have at least one thing stuff up? "Oh sh** I've just realised..." seems to be a given sentence when I sew, followed by DD in the background saying, "here we go...". All up it probably took 3hrs to complete...why on earth do such simple projects like this one take me so long to finish?!

I had so much fun making though, kiddies were asleep, fire was roaring with a cuppa on the go. I'm itching to make another...but I'm still catching up on sleep.

A project completed. Landscape cushion inspired by this illustration...

Originally I wanted the cushion to have a relaxed floppy feel, one you can toss wherever...a style that would fit in with the relaxed machine stitch and a fray finish. However, because of the layered applique it ended up rather stiff in some place and some what loose and thin in others, so I was left with this inconsistency in texture and feel that I didn't like so much.

So I decided to thicken the entire cushion front with a layer of fusible interfacing. It has given the cushion a finish which acts more as a placement/decorative pillow rather than one that can be thrown about and used to bits (not saying it can't be used) it's just not as comfy and loose as I had planned it to be. I do think it turned out rather cute though.

I will sit back and reflect on how I will make my next landscape cushion. I think: bigger, softer, zipped and more raveled fibres.

Something else - working on a new blog celebrating 'Mums'. I've been sitting on this idea for a while now, not knowing where I was going with it. It will take sometime getting it going as I want to tell my story of Her Red Apple.

May - Week No.1

It has been a busy week for the first week of May...

Observing these little creatures. There are swarms of dragonflies everywhere at the moment. I took about 10 photos of this fella and he didn't move an inch.
My beautiful and generous grandfather passed away May 3rd. I will miss his wonderful deep laugh.The big delight observing shapes at the park grounds. "Look mum it's a love heart."
Realising our little delight is not so little anymore...
My birthday May 5th. My gorgeous man took me out for brunch. The Corner Shop cafe in Yarraville - it was so delicious.
Missed my mum terribly on Mothers Day. Her Farrah Fawcett days...
Sorted through some of mum's shoes, she lived in heals...not short ones either.
Completed a project - hurray. More photos soon.

I dreamt of my mother last night. I didn't see her face...all I saw was a pure white cloud in the form of a being, but the energy I felt was indescribable. It felt so real. She wrapped her arms around me loosely and with the most intense motherly love and powerful but gentle force, she lifted me off the ground and I floated with her. I was so overwhelmed and kept repeating the word "mum" in a deep and heartfelt voice. It must have lasted 4 seconds, and then suddenly a flash of numbers appeared , maybe 7 or 8 times very quickly...there were single, double and three digit numbers - I just wish I could remember which numbers they were, I only remember seeing numbers 6 and 2.

We weren't alone, I could feel there were others around but I don't know who. I'm hoping it was my grandfather (mum's dad) who passed away yesterday afternoon of a heart attack. His primary cancer was of the bile duct, rare. Diagnosed in the same month as mum October 2009, and died 62 days later (and yes, working this out just now has given me the goose bumps as these are the only 2 numbers I remembered in my dream...my gosh...coincidence?). Probably.

Mum was with me last night. Whether it was in dream or in spirit, she was with me and I woke up the next morning with the most energy I've had since her death, but there's an emptiness that I know will never go away.

PART 1: Working on a new blogger template, so excuse the wishy washy placement. I'll be a html expert editor by the end of it. I've always wanted to post larger images...now that I know it's possible, I need to do it! There is a lot of time involved, loads of fiddling, why can't I just choose minima stretch and have it work for me?! I'm love the simple but effective layout of this blog, so if anyone out there knows how...please share x.

PART 2: Following on from my last creative space - landscape cushion cover - chipping at it. Deciding on which bird design to choose and fabric choice....liking the simple black cotton idea.
